Just over two months ago in Brazil, the General Consul of the United States in Rio de Janeiro, Scott Hamilton, surprises with a great Portuguese and shows himself at ease in his new city. On a recent visit to Galpão Aplauso, accompanied by Education and Culture attaché, Kevin Brosnahan, he got to know a little about our work, watched a presentation by the students, got emotional and compared his story with that of the Rio boys struggling to conquer a future best.
A diplomat with remarkable passages for countries in Latin America and Africa, Mr. Hamilton spoke about the separation of his parents when he was a child and the daily battle of his mother, who worked in three different places to support the family. At the time living in a neighborhood considered dangerous, many times, when his mother was not present, it was little Scott who helped his brother with daily tasks.
He recognizes that he could have chosen another path, but he chose to study. The same as the Galpão students do today, who redraw their history with each completed course. For the United States General Consul in Rio, what is most important is our values, our knowledge and our dreams. There is no way not to agree.
Welcome to Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Hamilton. Galpão Aplauso hopes to see you again!
